FLN: Central Library Combines Tradition with Innovation

Helsinki will soon become the home of the library of the 2020’s, the new Helsinki Central Library, that will be the most popular meeting place in the city. We expect 1,5 million visitors every year – that means 5 000 a day. It will become a haven for innovation, where users are active, participate and produce content. It will be a non-commercial public space, open for everyone – a place for learning, culture and entertainment.

The Helsinki Central Library will be a combination of personal cultivation, culture and entertainment. It will be a vibrant and functionally versatile meeting place, a house of literature in which the users are the focus. The new Central Library will be much more than a traditional library. It will be a dynamic entity comprised of the physical spaces, technology, library collections, staff, cooperation partners and clients.

Find out more about the new Helsinki Central Library in library director Maija Berndtson’s interview.
